He still doesn’t get it. President Bush’s State of The Union address used the word ‘environment’ just three times. The phrase ‘climate change’ cropped up just once. The much-publicised drive to reduce gas consumption by 20% over the next 10 years is intended to reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil, not oil, period. So, while increasing the supply of alternative fuels to 35 billion gallons by 2017, and extending fuel efficiency standards to all cars, Bush advocates the stepping up of domestic oil production “in environmentally sensitive ways”. Fat chance.
For me, this is the most telling paragraph:
“America is on the verge of technological breakthroughs that will enable us to live our lives less dependent on oil. These technologies will help us become better stewards of the environment — and they will help us to confront the serious challenge of global climate change.”
Still convinced that technological solutions can be found to every problem. Still convinced that Americans can continue to live their lives without inconvenience or adjustment. Still dismissive of the dire consequences of American profligate consumption. Still President for the next two years.
